Kitchen updates

Image
Our kitchen updates are nearly complete - when we first looked at the cabin, we loved the solid hickory cabinets and the slate floors, but with our family of 6, the layout and breakfast bar didn't really work. Additionally with 4 kids, we really wanted a dishwasher and a larger fridge, oh and an ice maker.  We began by putting in an over the range convection microwave to free up counter space, then a new stainless larger side by side fridge that we installed across the room from the original fridge (with a waterline so we have in the door water and ice). This freed up space to install a new dishwasher and additional cabinets. We also added 2 large pantry cabinets. We found a beautiful log table that provides seating for our family, and some  open shelves for above the table. We finished up with new quartz countertops and a new faucet and large undermount stainless sink.  It has been a project, but we are very pleased with the results.  Before - love the slate floor a...

Fireplace updates

We love a wood burning fireplace - there is really nothing better than a crackling fireplace on a chilly evening.  Our cabin has a very nice fireplace with a rock chimney up the outside of the cabin but 60 years of use had taken their toll. We updated the fireplace with new doors, cleaned and painted the vents, new trim and a greytone whitewash.    Before  After (and we do still have a tv, but have moved it to the left)

Progress - furnishing

With COVID, most furniture stores are sold out or long delays, so we had to get creative to find furniture. We are lucky to live in a neighborhood that has a couple great swap sites, so we have been able to find many of our furniture items from neighbors and friends.  We have been fortunate to pick up some really cute vintage pieces as well as some that are just eclectic and fun.  I especially love this little tin cabinet that we are using to hold spices - it pairs nicely with our original 1957 heater that is still going strong.  The bedrooms are setup as follows:  The bedroom nearest the bath has a king size platform bed with a luxury coil mattress, and a couple of rustic side tables with drawers. We also found a fun blue sideboard that provides a bit of storage. We decided that cable was really unnecessary at the cabin, so we have smart tvs to allow a bit of movie or show viewing pleasure, this bedroom has a 43" smart tv. This bedroom also has a wolf picture that J...
